What is the Professional Year in IT?
The Professional Year in Computer Science is a job-readiness program aimed at former international ICT students who have been issued a 485 Skilled Graduate Visa. Holders of a Bridging Visa A or B may also apply for entry into the Professional Year.
General Information
Class Requirement: QIBA has a BYOD (Bring your own Device) policy. Please ensure you bring your laptop to every class and ensure that it is fully charged for use.
The Professional Year in Computer Science is a job-readiness program aimed at former international ICT students who have been issued a 485 Skilled Graduate Visa. Holders of a Bridging Visa A or B may also apply for entry into the Professional Year.
To enrol ensure you can provide the following necessary certified documents:
- Copy of Passport
- Copy of 485 Temporary Graduate Visa (either Graduate Work or Post-Study Work stream) or Bridging 485 Visa A.
- Academic Transcript and Completion Letter evidencing completion of your ICT-related Bachelor or Master degree from an Australian Institution (minimum of 2 years’ full-time study in Australia)
- English Language Proficiency Test Results – PTE (minimum overall 50, no band below 50), IELTS (minimum overall 6.0, no band below 6.0), TOEFL or OET (equivalent)
All students are also required to undertake a face-to-face pre-enrolment interview with the accredited provider to ensure course suitability and viability.

Fill out our application form and send it to py.enrolments@qiba.edu.au along with all required documentation.
A face-to-face pre-enrolment interview will then be scheduled.
Step 3
You will be issued a letter of offer and an invitation to attend a face-to-face pre-enrolment interview, once you submit your application.
If correct documentation has been submitted and payment has been made, you will then be issued with a Confirmation of Enrolment and will be able to commence class.
The Internship component of the Professional Year Program requires all ICT candidates to complete 220 hours in the workplace. Generally the candidates will complete this Internship over 3 days per week for 12 weeks.
All candidates complete an online course with the ACS in conjunction with their Internship. This ACS online course (PE Online) offers further insight into ICT and provides mentoring to enhance the candidates Internship experience.

Internship FAQ
1. Can I use my previous internship or work experience to fulfill the placement requirement?
No, you may start your placement only after you have successfully completed ALL classes and signed the placement agreement, issued by the internship team.
2. If I am working more than 22 hours per week and will complete the minimum required 220 hours in less than 10 weeks, can I finish my internship earlier?
No, the minimum duration of the placement is 10 weeks.
3. What is the ACS PE Online course?
In conjunction with your Internship placement, you will be undertaking a Professional Environments (PE) online course delivered by ACS. There will be no classes, only the activities that you will need to undertake within the given deadlines. The PE Online course consists of 3 modules:
o Introductory Module: Unlock Your Course
o Module 1: ICT Professionalism, Ethics, and Governance
o Module 2: Project Management and Risk Management
o Module 3: Professional Development and Mentorship
Modules 1-3 includes the following activities:
- 1 Discussion (20pts)
- 1 Journal (20pts)
- 1 Quiz (5pts)
- 1 Major Assignment (55pts)
Candidates are given two chances to achieve a satisfactory grade for each assessment task, other than discussion contribution where all their entries are assessed.
4. When is my PE Online course going to start?
The ACS PE Online course date is pre-scheduled to begin two weeks, on Friday (if starting internship component in 2021) or Monday (if starting internship component in 2022) after your last class.
5. How do I log in to the ACS PE Online course?
A couple of days prior to the ACS PE Online course commencement, ACS will send you an email inviting you to start the course. You will be able to access the course through the http://education.acs.org.au/ link, using your ACS Member’s login details.
6. Where and how can I register for the ACS event?
You can find all ACS events on the ACS website, Event section: https://www.acs.org.au/cpd-education/event-listing.html
As part of the PY Program and the PE Online course, you will be required to attend a certain number of ACS Events to gain a minimum of 6 CPD hours. You are to complete 3 reports on the ACS Events and submit them during the PE Online course.
7. Where can I find the ACS Event Report template?
You can find the Report template in your ACS PY Portal. It’s best to write up the report soon after the event so you don’t forget.
NOTE: Always take a photo of the speaker/s and the group at the Event, or a screenshot if it is an online webinar.
8. When are the ACS Event Reports due?
ACS Event Reports are due by the end of Module 3 of the ACS PE Online course.
