        Internships

The ACS Professional Year Internship provides a practical work experience for students to develop professional skills specific to the Australian workplace or professional business environment. The Internship component of the program aims to utilise the skills and knowledge learned during their facilitated coursework.

In accordance with Australian workplace legislation, the Professional Year Internship is the equivalent to Fair Work Act 2009’s definition of a Vocation Placement. That is a formal work experience arrangement that is part of an education or training course.

The Internship can give students important skills to help them transition successfully from study to work, while giving industry and business the opportunity to enrich student learning experiences and increase the number of work-ready graduates.

Internships that meet the definition under the Fair Work Act are lawfully unpaid.

The internship provides students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge appropriate to their ICT area of interest/specialisation and allow them to reflect upon the development of those skills to enhance their workforce capability and gain exposure to the local labour market.

Whilst undertaking the ACS Professional Environments (PE) Online course, which is undertaken online alongside the Internship placement, students will be required to undertake a self-evaluation using the SFIA Framework (Skills Framework for the Information Age) to help provide guidance and support in their own professional development and future workforce development plans.

This will in turn, allow them to align their internship experience to help develop relevant skills essential to their job function/role.

        1. With the help of the QIBA Internship team, prepare for and attend an Internship interview with a Host Employer to secure a placement
        2. A professional dress code applies at the Interview and when attending the Internship placement
        3. Abide by all Host Company workplace policies and WHS regulations
        4. Turn your phone off or on silent, and do not check social media or newsfeed during work hours. Only take personal calls in your break times.
        5. Maintain regular contact with the QIBA Internship team via email and phone
        6. Contact QIBA if you have any concerns or if there is anything that you are not comfortable with
        7. Be punctual every day. Attend your Internship at the agreed times on the agreed days
        8. Complete the minimum hours (220) and minimum weeks (10) required to successfully complete the PY Program
        9. Complete and return all Internship documentation immediately following the completion of the Internship placement.
        10. Give an oral presentation of the Internship experience at the Graduation Ceremony

        There are 4 Internship types:

        1. Provider Placed: We match your skills with a nominated ANZSCO code and endeavour to source a placement that compliments your primary course of study
        2. Own Employment: you may utilise your existing or future paid ICT employment  –  subject to approval pending documentation to substantiate the employment
        3. Self-Sourced Internship: A placement obtained by you but is not your employment
        4. Other Location Considerations: e.g. interstate, remote or regional placements

The Internship component of the Professional Year Program aims to utilise the skills and knowledge learned during their provider facilitated coursework.

It provides a practical work experience for those aiming to develop professional skills specific to the Australian business environment.

Duration of PY Internship component: minimum of 220 hours, over a minimum of 10 weeks.

During the Internship component, you will be required to do a Professional Environments course (PE online) with the ACS (duration of 13 weeks).
